May 19 - 23, 2025

Kickapoo Family,

Thank you to everyone who helped with graduation Saturday evening! It was a beautiful ceremony and it isn't possible without all the work each of you put in behind the scenes. Thank you!

Enjoy the final week of 24-25. As you know, it is vital to keep students in class and engaged bell-to-bell all week long. We have already seen an uptick in discipline last week. Continue to follow the same rules and expectations we have had all year. Now is not the time to loosen up. We can all loosen up at 3:10:01 p.m. on Friday, May 23rd :-) Thank you and Go Chiefs!

MOST information you need now and for the year can be found here on our Quick Links.

If you'd like me to consider including something in this newsletter send it to me via email by 3 p.m. Friday.

* Retirement Celebration Tuesday, May 20th
* 4th Quarter Report Card Posting - Make sure to read the information below and linked closely. We have already received questions and the answers are here if you read closely. Thank you.
I have had a few questions about end of year grades and Canvas/TAC sync. I reached out to Thomas Maerke and this is what he provided- please take a look and if you have any questions, ask Stephanie House.

Just kidding, I am happy to help but know only enough to be dangerous. Thomas is your best bet if you are stuck.

A few things that stood out for me:

  1. Have all assignments created by Friday, May 16 so there is plenty of time for them to sync
  2. Manually sync through the teacher portal each time you update grades this week
  3. And the answer to the question I have been getting the most: Submissions and grading completed on Friday, May 23rd may require you to manually update the student grade in TAC.
  4. From Lisa - Do NOT use NGN for grades. This creates a major problem on our end. We know and understand those of you who teach Launch do this. However, do NOT do it for Kickapoo seated grades.
  5. After posting grades to Report Card (RC) in TAC you MUST check grades in TAC AND double check them with Canvas before leaving for summer to ensure they are accurate. If they are not go to the top of this list and start over :-)
  6. Thank you!

Check out a helpful guide on how to manually post grades to the TAC Report Card view

* Grades for ELs - Hello teachers! As we wrap up the semester, please see the following reminder about grading for our EL students.
Failing Grades for ELs
Per DESE, failing grades can only be assigned to an EL student if evidence-based modifications, accommodations, or supports were provided. You can read the full guidance from DESE here. Translation alone is typically not an adequate modification for our EL students. You can always view recommended supports and modifications by looking at a student’s ILP under the paperclip in eSchool.
Please let me know if you have any questions! Thanks!

* End of Year Checkout List - Faculty Check Out 2025 sheets (pink) were put in mailboxes Friday afternoon. Be sure the information at the bottom of the form is accurate.
Key Inventory (white) – Verify the keys you have.
Plan Book/Grade Book Order Form (salmon) – Samples are on the back counter by Karen.
Supply Order Form (green) – KHS pays $100 worth of supplies for each teacher.
  1. Please return the items listed to the appropriate person.  The person will initial the line as the items are returned.
  2. Paperwork should be turned in by 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 23. IF you need longer, please ask. However, this should be the exception. . .
* 25 - 26 Course Syllabus - One of your tasks is to create and upload a syllabus for each of your classes for next year.  Kickapoo has specific expectations of what should be present in each syllabus. The link below lists these expectations.  Please ensure that you have met these requirements:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lHwHv-Y8QR56eu3xq3BZrixjZ22wTG7f/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=100850739784125152029&rtpof=true&sd=true

When you are ready to upload, please find your folder, then upload each syllabus into that folder.  Here is the link to the folders:

 https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/17BfaTiyjXRTfcw9cJMZLDoOmpV8YstUL?usp=sharing

After you have uploaded a syllabus for each of your 25-26 classes, your department head will initial your end of year checklist.

Please DO NOT print your class syllabus until you return in the fall AND admin or department chair has given you the green light.  The district may require verbiage to be added before school begins, but we will not receive this until August.

Thank you!

Stephanie House

* SmartPass Student Restriction List - Here is the most up to date list of students with SmartPass restrictions.
* KHS Help Utilization Reminders - Utilize KHS HELP anytime you are taking your class outside your classroom!  You must include your cell phone number in the email.
* ALL Staff - Attendance Sheets UPDATED - We need everyone to update their Attendance Sheets to 4th Quarter! Remove all 3rd Quarter attendance sheets in your Substitute folder and run five new sets for 4th Quarter.  Thank you.
* NO Chief Time this week.
Testing Block Out Dates - REVIEW closely.
* Final Exams - Friday, May 23. NO early Finals are given. Any exceptions must be approved by Mrs. Helfrecht (assistant principal). She will then notify teachers.
SPS High School Final Exam Exemption Requirements. Students are eligible for finals exemption by meeting the following criteria:
  • 90% overall attendance (school-sponsored activities do not count as absences) per semester

  • Received no ISS or OSS for the semester

  • Passing the class with an 80% or greater prior to the final exam

    • Exempt students may take the final to improve their grade in a class; in this case, the final grade cannot hurt the student’s overall grade

    • Required to attend class during the final exam

block and complete optional enrichment tasks

provided

Dual credit, AP, IB, and virtual classes

are not eligible for final exemptions.

* Early Finals - Should NOT be happening without approval from Leslie Helfrecht. See below.
I just want to clarify a few things about early finals- if a student is absent on the day of finals for a school excused absence that the scheduling of which is out of their control, they automatically qualify for early finals. Additionally, if you sponsor or coach any activity or sport that has a competition scheduled on the last day of school, please let me know directly.
This is still a blockout day for field trips but there are some things scheduled at the district or state level over which we have no control.
Please reach out with questions.
We currently only have junior Scholar Bowl students who will be taking early finals and one other student whose teachers have been contacted.
Thank you- Leslie
* Final Exam Exemption List - The list for 9th - 11th graders will be sent out Monday, May 19th.
* Seniors Attendance - Do NOT count them absent this week.
* 4th Quarter Incentive I - May 23rd in S102 from 3:25 until 9:30 pm. Dinner will be provided. They will need to bring a drink and snacks if they want.
If you have a student between 50-59% then you can sign them up for Incentive I. You MUST sign up your student by end of day May 22. Yes, that is before finals. If they pass their final, send me an email and I will remove them. You MUST talk to the parents or get an email confirmation! They will have to provide transportation home as it is one day only. Dinner will be provided but not snacks or drinks. I will have tutors available to help. No late sign-ups! If they are in danger sign them up and then remove them on Friday
The work cannot be on canvas and should be tied to how far away from the 60% and be able to be done in 6 hours. Tests, worksheets, project, research paper are all ideas. Please give me all work by end of the day on May 22 and it must include a key or rubric for grading! Send all materials as I will not be able to find you to get anything.
Any questions, please ask me. This is the students last chance to get credit and pass.
Here is the link to sign-ups: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScTFnWdbdpEJJrNUwEHZ6mJGg85pyb2fq22BZ1iemREfaQqtA/viewform?usp=header
Thank you!

* EOC Scores - will be emailed to each EOC teacher early this week. Thank you!
* Make sure ALL students have ID Badges at all times. Use this link all year long to order student IDs. This should be a daily part of each block. . .ask students for IDs if it isn't visible. If they didn't receive one, lost it, forgot it, etc. use the link to order an ID. Roland will get one made and to the student ASAP.
* Emergency Snacks for Students - Just wanted to remind you we do have snacks for your classroom in the counseling center. This is for teachers only to have emergency snacks on hand in case you have a child who is hungry. Please use this with your discretion. Care to Learn does not want this to be just snacks for your class or incentives. Please do not send students to our office for snacks. I have placed bags by the draw so you can take a bag to have on hand.
* Student Groups, Clubs, etc. Posters/Flyers -
ALL club/group posters should be removed by Friday, May 23rd. Thank you.
